Signs Your Pool Has a Leak, Not Just Evaporation
Normal evaporation depends on heat, wind, and humidity. A systematic check separates normal surface loss from structural water loss. These are the signs worth acting on:
- Water level dropping more than a quarter-inch per day exceeds what evaporation explains, even during a hot Thomasville summer.
- Air bubbles from return jets or a pump basket that won’t stay primed suggest a crack in an underground suction line drawing in air.
- Persistent algae or chemical imbalance despite correct dosing can indicate water carrying chemicals out as it escapes.
- Soft or wet ground near the equipment pad points to pressurized water escaping underground.
- An unexplained spike in the water bill is often the first financial signal of a slow, ongoing leak.
- Adding water more than once a week means water loss is exceeding normal rates.
A useful homeowner screening step is the bucket test: fill a bucket, set it on a pool step, and mark both the pool level and the bucket level. After 24 hours, if the pool dropped more than the bucket, water loss beyond evaporation is likely. That’s when a professional diagnostic visit makes sense.
How We Locate a Pool Leak Before We Repair It
We don’t repair anything until we know exactly where the leak is. Our technicians use acoustic listening devices to detect the sound of water escaping from pressurized underground lines, pressure testing to isolate individual plumbing runs, and dye testing to confirm structural breaches in skimmers, light niches, and main drains.
The entire diagnostic process works with the pool at its normal water level. No draining, no heavy machinery, no disruption to your deck or landscaping. Common locations we check systematically include underground PVC suction lines from skimmers and main drains to the pump, return jet fittings and seals, underwater light niches, the skimmer throat, and the pool shell itself. At the end of every visit, we deliver a full inspection report documenting the confirmed leak location and recommended next steps. Our technicians arrive on time and leave your property clean.
Repair Capabilities & Independent Diagnostic Reporting
Our pool leak repair service in Thomasville, GA covers concrete, fiberglass, and vinyl-lined pools. Repair methods include injecting structural cracks and replacing underground pipe sections. All work is confined strictly to the confirmed damaged area, keeping disruption to your deck and landscaping to a minimum.
The diagnostic phase is kept objective and independent from the repair phase. You receive the full inspection report and findings regardless of who performs the repair. Use us for a seamless repair experience, or take the verified data to another contractor of your choosing. That’s what Independent Diagnostic Reporting means in practice. American Leak Detection is also preferred by top insurers, which can support smoother coverage for applicable repair situations.
Why Thomasville Pool Owners Call American Leak Detection
Pool leak detection isn’t a secondary service we offer alongside pool maintenance or plumbing. It’s what we were built around. That focus drives our proprietary non-invasive techniques, our rigorous technician training program, and our ongoing investment in new detection technology. Every technician on every job is trained, licensed, and insured.
General pool maintenance companies and plumbers often approach leak problems by process of elimination, which can mean unnecessary excavation before the source is confirmed. Our methodology locates the leak first. Repair work follows from verified findings, not guesswork.

“I had an awful rotten egg smell as soon as I bought our house. After calling two plumbers (who charged me a fee to tell me nothing was wrong), the Gas Company (no gas leak), and the Public Works Department, I finally called American Leak Detection. They came in, investigated with smoke, and fixed the problem. For the first time in two months, my house doesn't smell like a restaurant toilet. Highly recommend them!”- Sandi T.

“I can't say enough good things about their service! We had a slab leak that flooded the master bedroom and they came as quickly as they could and then rearranged their work schedule so the repair could be made and we could once again have water turned on. The workmen were professional and efficient. I hope I never have to use that kind of service again but if so, they are he best.”- Carolyn R.

“Tree roots had cracked my filter pipes and I was losing water badly. I was referred to American Leak Detection and set up an appointment. Daniel came out and did his best to diagnose the problem. He got very strange results and it was hard to determine the exact pipe(s) that were cracked but since I'd had a similar repair done 6 years ago and we could see evidence of the tree root damage from above, I felt confident we knew were the issue was and I contracted for the work. I was pleasantly surprised to see Daniel return to perform the work. I arranged to be home that day so I could see what he found. I supposed I hovered, taking pictures of the process, asking questions as he went along. He never got annoyed and answered every question with a smile. I don't think i ever saw anyone work harder. It was obvious from that start he had a lot of experience and knew what he was doing. Digging out the area had to be done mostly by hand which he did efficiently without complaints. He found multiple pipes cracked which explained the odd results during diagnosis. The job took longer than expected because it was difficult work and he ran out of daylight but on the job until he it wasn't possible anymore that day. Even though he was fully booked for the following day, his company rearranged his schedule so he could return the following afternoon. I returned home early from work and was able to see him complete the job. He even patched the deck with new concrete like an artisan, taking every care to make it as smooth and neat as possible. After 30 years in this house, we have had many service people come to do work. No one has ever delivered better than Daniel. He was competent, diligent, and pleasant. The cost wasn't cheap but it was fair. I don't mind at all paying for quality service.”- String R.
