Understanding Common Causes of Sewer Leaks
In Atlanta, sewer systems can be compromised by various factors specific to our environment. Some common causes include:
- Age-related wear: Old pipelines in Atlanta’s historic neighborhoods can degrade over time, leading to leaks. A significant concern for older homes is the material used in these pipelines, which may not meet modern standards and are prone to quicker deterioration.
- Tree root intrusion: Atlanta’s abundant greenery, while beautiful, often results in roots encroaching on sewer lines. The relentless growth of roots can puncture or wrap around pipes, eventually causing fractures and leaks that could escalate into severe plumbing issues if not addressed promptly.
- Obstructions and blockages: Household waste like fatty substances and non-biodegradable products can block pipes, causing pressure build-up and leaks. Homeowners may not realize the damaging impact of daily habits such as disposing of cooking oil down the drain, which hardens and sticks to the walls of sewer lines over time.

“Jim came on two different leak situations. The first time was an absolute ludicrous leak that the water company said has used 400,000 gallons of water in 1 month. So they turned our water off. Jim resolved that issue and worked with our insurance company and it was very smooth going. They spotted the leak and it was fixed and then noticed another area that might be a problem, but no water leaking. They warned us of this area. Five months later we noticed a bill that was going up. Sure enough, we called Jim again and out he came and found the leak and it was under a sink and pinpointed that leak and it was resolved immediately. Jim is such a nice person and so easy to talk with and communicate with when a woman is all but looney with NO WATER. And, a second leak. All was a very good experience with such a monumental leak.”- Phyllis M.
